03/18/10 at 07:07 PM PDT
The National Hockey League has suspended Anaheim Ducks blueliner James Wisniewski eight games for his hit on Chicago Blackhawks' Brent Seabrook. The incident took place during Wednesday's Blackhawks-Ducks game in Anaheim, Seabrook caught Anaheim's Corey Perry with a hit near the end boards that knocked Perry down. Seconds later, Wisniewski laid a crushing hit on Seabrook that knocked the Chicago defenceman out of the game. Starting from the faceoff circle, Wisniewski sped at Seabrook and launched himself off the ice and into the defenceman at the end boards.

Leighton Out for Season
03/18/10 at 07:10 PM PDT
DALLAS – The news was worse than the Flyers could have ever hoped. Michael Leighton’s magical run as the Flyers’ savior is over. According to Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren, Leighton will be out for 8-to-10 weeks with a “severe” left high ankle sprain. A normal high ankle sprain probably would’ve kept Leighton off the ice for 3 or 4 weeks, just in time for the start of the NHL playoffs. Leighton said he “heard a pop” when he was leaning back to make a save in the first period against Nashville on Tuesday. Without him, the Flyers will have to rely on backup Brian Boucher for their stretch run and most likely the first two playoff rounds – should they make it that far. The regular season ends on April 11. Tonight (8:30 p.m. game time) is Boucher's first start since Dec. 21.

Ovechkin Apologizes for Campbell Hit
03/17/10 at 12:41 PM PDT
The Washington Capitals released a statement from Alex Ovechkin on Tuesday in which he apologized for Sunday's hit on the Blackhawks' Brian Campbell that earned him a two-game suspension. Other NHL players also weighed in with their reactions to the hit and the subsequent suspension. Here is the full text of the apology: "I am very sorry that Brian was injured and I hope he is able to return to his team soon. NHL hockey is a physical game. We all play hard every time we are on the ice and have battles each shift in every game we play so we can do our jobs and win. As players we must accept responsibility for our actions and I am no different but I did not intend to injure Brian and that is why I was disappointed with the NHL's decision yesterday. Every time I have the honor to play for my team, I will continue to do what I have done since I was taught to play. I will play hard, play with passion and play with respect for my teammates, opponents and fans. I look forward to returning to my team and doing everything I can to be the best player I can be."

Loss of Campbell Puts Hurt on Hawks' D
03/16/10 at 10:54 AM PDT
LOS ANGELES — Things have gone from bad to worse for the Blackhawks. Just when you thought two disastrous defeats over the weekend couldn't have been any more damaging, news hit regarding Brian Campbell's probable season-ending injury. For a team that has been struggling defensively for the last month or so, the prospect of heading into the postseason without one of its best defensemen is quite a blow. The question now is how to overcome the loss.

Ovechkin Suspended for Two Games
03/15/10 at 08:44 PM PDT
Alex Ovechkin has been suspended two games by the NHL for his hit yesterday on Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell. The Caps captain and two-time league MVP was assessed a five-minute major and his third misconduct of the season for boarding Campbell, who reportedly could miss the rest of the season with a broken clavicle and ribs. "We have no problem with the way Alex tried to finish his check," GM George McPhee said in a statement. "Unfortunately, an injury resulted. We are disappointed with the suspension but do not want to comment further."

Campbell Likely Out for Season
03/15/10 at 11:19 AM PDT
Alex Ovechkin said he "just pushed" Brian Campbell. The Blackhawks saw it a bit differently from the Capitals winger's simple explanation for a hit that possibly ended Campbell's regular season and ended Ovechkin's day early when he was tossed during the first period of Washington's 4-3 overtime victory Sunday at the United Center. After Campbell had passed the puck, Ovechkin checked the defenseman and sent him flying shoulder first into the end boards. Campbell was down on the ice for several minutes before slowly skating off the ice, and he could miss significant time. According to a source, Campbell is out for at least the rest of the regular season after suffering a broken collarbone.

Avery's Spark Is Crucial to Rangers
03/15/10 at 11:29 AM PDT
If the Rangers are going to make the playoffs, they need Sean Avery to be the player he was in each of the last three stretch drives to the playoffs when he wasn't a third-line afterthought but an essential ingredient in the club's success. Which is to say that if the Rangers are going to make the playoffs, they need Avery to be exactly what he was yesterday at the Garden when he scored twice, created a pair of power plays for his team, disrupted the opposition and was a focal point in the 3-1 victory over the Flyers -- a win that pushed the Blueshirts within one point of the eighth-place Bruins, though Boston holds two games in hand. "I see Sean as a player who is at his best when the games are more emotional, which they are down the stretch and in the playoffs," Henrik Lundqvist told The Post. "These are the games where he belongs."

Habs Are On Fire Since Olympics
03/15/10 at 11:23 AM PDT
The music was throbbing Saturday night in the Canadiens' Bell Centre gym on the other side of the dressing-room wall, a group of players pedalling stationary bikes toward, they hope, the playoffs. And now in the glow of Montreal's 3-2 victory over Boston, its fifth straight victory the current league-high, came the question to defenceman Andrei Markov. The one about how the club must feel good about this streak that's coming at a very opportune time. "Wait, wait, wait," Markov replied, having scored his fifth goal of the season and added his 22nd assist. "We still have 12 games left. Every game is going to be huge for us, we have to play hard every game."

Seidenberg a Big Plus for Bruins
03/15/10 at 11:18 AM PDT
MONTREAL — Five shots. Two assists. On the ice for three Bruins goals. Twenty-eight shifts for 22 minutes 15 seconds of ice time. Yeah, Dennis Seidenberg was pretty good in the Bruins' 5-1 rout of the Flyers Thursday. "I thought [Thursday] was his best game," coach Claude Julien said after yesterday’s practice at the Bell Centre. "He was solid. He’s brought some grit. He’s moving the puck well. He’s shooting the puck well."

GMs Want Rule Change on Head Shots
03/11/10 at 03:02 PM PST
After three days of meetings in Boca Raton, Florida, the National Hockey League's general managers have put forward a recommendation for a rule change to address hits to the head in league games. The following language was agreed to unanimously by the group: "A lateral, back pressure or blindside hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and or the principal point of contact is not permitted. A violation of the above will result in a minor or major penalty and shall be reviewed for possible supplemental discipline." "We felt there is a degree of responsibility - moreso to the player receiving the hit - when a guy's coming straight at you. But it's that blindside hit that we find is so disturbing and it's tough to protect yourself in our game, with the speed," said NHL senior vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell.
